Four soldiers died in the course of the operation to clear terrorists from Buni-Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State

Four soldiers died in the course of the operation to clear terrorists from Buni-Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State as troops, on cordon and search, uncovered a bomb-making factory, where the improvised explosives devices, used by terrorists, are being produced.

The soldiers were reportedly killed by explosions while clearing the IEDs, which the terror group, Boko Haram, had deployed in different parts of the town.

A large quantity of IEDs, including those said to be commonly used by suicide bombers, were recovered from the site last Saturday.

A statement by Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, in Abuja on Friday, said the factory, which was located in a fertilizer company, had converted some of the materials there for production to all types of IEDs.

“Troops are still evacuating the materials, which include a large quantity of suicide bomber vests from the facility to their base. It is believed that the heavy-calibre bomb, used in blowing up the bridge between Damaturu and Buni-Yadi, was produced in the factory,” it said.

The statement added that terrorists were sacked from Buni-Yadi after a military assault, adding that the troops’ advance was delayed by the series of IEDs planted on the highway leading to the town.

“This discovery is expected to degrade the capability of terrorists in the production of explosives, which they have been using lavishly in the area until they were dislodged from their stronghold,” it added.

Nigerian states that have over 70% poverty rate.

A survey carried out on the bureau’s website, disclosed the Nigerian states that have over 70% poverty rate.
According to  Gistmania, Sokoto State remained the poorest state in Nigeria at the end of 2012, with a National Bureau Statistics, of 81.2% poverty rate.
Here are the top 10 poorest states in Nigeria
Sokoto – 81.2%
Katsina – 74.5%
Adamawa – 74.2%
Gombe – 74.2 %
Jigawa – 74.1%
Plateau – 74.1%
Ebonyi – 73.6%
Bauchi – 73%
Kebbi – 72%
Zamfara – 70.8%
However, Niger is the state with the lowest poverty rate which is 33.8%. It was followed by Osun (37.9%) and Ondo (45.7%). Bayelsa (47%) and Lagos (48.6%) have less than 50% poverty rate.
According to NBS, the national unemployment rate at the beginning of 2012 was 23.9%. Statistician-General Yemi Kale said that 112.519 million Nigerians (69%)lived in poverty conditions.

Zamfara State had the highest unemployment rate which is 42.6%. It was followed by Bauchi (41.4%). Other states that had above 30% unemployment rates include:
Gombe – 38.7%
Nassarawa – 36.5%
Jigawa – 35.9%
Edo – 35.2%
Adamawa – 33.8%
Kaduna – 30.3%
The survey concluded that the average poverty rate in the Northwest geopolitical zone is 71.4%, which remained the highest in the said area. It is followed by the Northeast region which has 69.1% and the North central region which has 60.7%. Poverty was least dominant in the Southwest (49.8%), South-South (55.5%), and South-East regions (59.5%).

A gun battle which occurred in Lekki, Lagos State today,

A gun battle which occurred in Lekki, Lagos State today, March 12, has reportedly left many people dead.

The incident occurred close to the Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge as armed robbers were said to have invaded a bank near the area.

Unconfirmed reports however state that the main target of the robbers was the money collected by attendants at the toll gate.  The robbers were said to have dressed in army uniform as they waylaid and reportedly shot policemen who were stationed near a bullion van.

Police officers stationed in the area were said to have engaged the robbers but were overwhelmed by their superior fire power.

“Around 4.45pm, I was driving to my office in Ikoyi from Lekki but when I got a spot on the bridge, I heard sporadic gunshots. Fortunately, policemen at the tail end of the bridge inwards Ikoyi, shot back,” an eyewitness told Punch.

“We all came out of our vehicles and laid on the floor to avoid being hit by stray bullets. At some point, some of the policemen were overwhelmed by the fire power of the robbers and had to flee.The robbers later jumped into a speed boat and escaped through the water,” he added.

Security agents are said to be currently patrolling the area while traffic is said to have built up on the bridge
